Bike Rentals in Chikmagalur: Prices, Documents & What to Check

Best time: Year-round, though weekends in the Oct–Feb travel season and the coffee-blossom weeks book out fastest5 min read
Overview

Overview

Chikmagalur town has a working rental market for both scooters and motorcycles, aimed squarely at weekend visitors headed up to Mullayanagiri, Baba Budangiri, Kemmangundi and the coffee estate backroads in between. A handful of established rental operators — some purely local, some multi-city chains with a Chikmagalur counter — cover everything from a basic Activa to a Royal Enfield.

Pricing and availability shift with the season — weekends during the coffee-blossom months and the peak October–February travel season see both higher demand and, at some vendors, a seasonal premium — so it is worth locking in a booking a few days ahead rather than expecting to walk up on a busy Saturday.

Entry & exit

No permit required

Rentals typically run on a 24-hour clock from your pickup time, not a calendar day — returning late usually means a per-hour late fee.

  • Fuel is not included — return the tank at roughly the level you received it, or expect a refuelling charge.
  • Most vendors provide one helmet with the vehicle; confirm a pillion helmet at booking if you are riding two-up.
  • Photograph the vehicle’s existing scratches and dents together with the vendor before you ride off — it is the simplest way to avoid a damage dispute at return.
  • Some operators offer doorstep delivery and pickup to your homestay for an extra charge, which is worth asking about if you are arriving without your own transport.

Required documents

  • Original valid driving licence covering the vehicle class you are renting (not a photocopy)
  • A government photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, etc.) for the security deposit
  • Your local stay address and contact number
