Ayus Nature Homestay is a quiet, pet-friendly homestay on the forest edge outside Chikmagalur, with home-cooked meals from a kitchen garden and no activity schedule at all. It is the slow end of the Chikmagalur list — birding before breakfast, waterfall and estate routes a short drive away, and rooms that open onto green.
Ayus is the slow end of the Chikmagalur list. The forest begins more or less at the gate, the garden supplies a good share of what comes out of the kitchen, and the pace of the place is set entirely by the family running it.
Rooms are simple, clean and quiet, with windows opening onto green. There is no schedule and no activity desk; if you want a trek or a drive to a waterfall, someone will arrange it, and if you want to sit still for two days, nobody will suggest otherwise.
Food is the thing guests write about — home-cooked, local, served at fixed hours, and generous in a way that catches first-timers out.
Birdlife is unusually good here. Bring binoculars if you own them; borrow the family's if you do not.
