The stay

Overview

Good Earth Homestay is a family-run homestay in Chikmagalur, set inside a working arabica coffee estate in the Western Ghats of Karnataka. Rooms come with all meals, an estate walk and a bonfire most evenings. It suits couples and small families who want a quiet plantation stay within reach of Mullayanagiri, Baba Budangiri and the Chikmagalur trekking routes — booked direct, with no agent in between.

Good Earth is a homestay in the older sense of the word: you stay in someone's home, on their estate, and eat what the kitchen is cooking that day. The coffee blocks begin a few steps from the verandah and run to the boundary, and the estate is worked year-round rather than kept for show.

Mornings are quiet and often misted in. Filter coffee arrives before anyone asks for it, and breakfast is whatever the kitchen has decided on — akki rotti, dosa, occasionally kadubu if there is time. Lunch and dinner are Malnad-style and served at one long table.

The estate walk is the reason most people come. The family will take you out through the arabica and the pepper vines, explain the harvest cycle without turning it into a lecture, and stop at the spots on the property that are worth stopping at.

By evening the bonfire is lit. There is no bar and no entertainment programme, and the guests who come back are the ones who understood that was the point.

Guest story
“The estate walk on the first morning was worth the whole drive. We ate at the same table as the family for three days and rebooked before we left.”
